A sensor alone does not make a safe workplace
Not until the safety sensors are efficiently and reliably integrated in the machine safety circuit can the topic of safety at work be implemented in such a way that the sensors do not interfere with the machine processes and yet still offer the best-possible protection. Our Safety Relays and AS-Interface solutions open all possibilities to you her
With a width of just 17.5 mm (MSI-RM2) and 22.5 mm (MSI-SR4, MSI-2H), these Safety Relays are characterized by very narrow housings. As a result, you can realize the one- or two-channel connection of safety-related sensors in a space-saving and simple manner over up to three switch-off circuits for many applications.
Compared to conventional identification systems, RFID technology has one decisive advantage: no direct “visible contact” is necessary between the read/write unit and the transponder to read out information. An RFID system consists of a read/write unit, a transponder and the associated software. Information from the transponder is detected by means of electromagnetic waves. As a result, these systems can be used practically and reliably under even the most adverse conditions.
One of the big advantages of this technology becomes clear with stationary systems for RFID identification: in order to detect objects, it is enough to simply be “near” the reader. As a result, readers can be integrated at nearly any location in the system. In the area of RFID, Leuze electronic offers technical solutions that are oriented towards practical use. Their maximum connectivity with all common interface and fieldbus systems simplifies integration in existing systems.
RFID is also ideally suited for mobile use. One favorite area of application is, for example, in freight traffic at logistics hubs. But mobile devices are often advantageous in warehousing as well and guarantee smooth and fast identification. Moreover, our RFID solutions also read bar codes and 2D-codes.
The areas of application for RFID are as broad as the requirements placed on transponders. Leuze electronic offers an extensive and high-quality product segment for all conceivable applications. It includes transponders for fault-free use on metal, high-temperature transponders, self-adhesive SmartLabels or chip cards.
Fast and exact solutions
Bar codes have become a fixed part of today’s global economy. We are all familiar with them from the supermarket checkout, but the identification of goods and materials by universally used bar codes also controls many processes in logistics and in many production lines. The area of application of readers is correspondingly broad – from mobile hand-held operation to high-speed scanners for industrial applications.
Regardless of the area of application and the requirements you place on stationary bar code scanners, you are certain to find the right model in our mature family of bar code readers. Select the right line and raster scanner from various sizes, designs and performance levels. High scanning rates of up to 1000 scans/s, the smallest installation dimensions, particularly robust housings and even integrated heating for use in low-temperature applications are certain to perfectly meet the individual requirements of your application.
It is often not possible to use stationary scanners, for example in warehousing and logistics, if the bar codes are affixed at different locations on merchandise and materials. Used in this case are mobile bar code readers, which function as imagers and can read all common bar codes omnidirectionally. Depending on the area of application, models with wireless transmission or even combi devices, which can read 2D-codes and even RFID, can be chosen.
With two-dimensional codes, light and dark dots are arranged in a matrix. As a result, considerably more information can be stored in the same area than with a one-dimensional bar code. Thus, 2D-identification is ideally suited for additional applications, such as parts tracking, in which codes are directly affixed to the work piece.
You can count on an extensive range of 2D-code readers with excellent performance data from Leuze electronic. Our code readers read the most important 1D- and 2D-codes without fail; depending on the type, printed to directly marked, omnidirectional, static or in fast motion, inverse or mirrored codes, with reference code comparison or output of the code quality of printed codes. From small and robust to extremely fast to fully equipped, you’ll find the optimal solution for any application.
In addition to 2D-codes, all mobile code readers from Leuze electronic also read bar codes and can, thus, be used very flexibly. Even with low contrast and on surfaces such as metal or plastic, the high-quality optics function absolutely reliably. Available as interfaces are RS 232, PS2, USB and Bluetooth.
Light section sensors are well suited for applications in which objects have to be detected using their 3 dimensional form. They measure height profiles along a projected laser line. With these sensors, objects with high resolution can be detected quickly and reliably in 3D. The object is illuminated solely by the laser measurement beam integrated in the sensor.
The profile camera is used wherever height profiles need to be determined for moving or static objects. An additional encoder port supports the generation of calibrated 3D data. This opens numerous application possibilities, such as robot guidance as well as contour/volume measurements.
Smart cameras are fast and flexible solutions for industrial image processing. They are very powerful and can be integrated quickly and at low cost. Smart cameras are used in the areas of quality assurance, object detection and position determination, for identification or for production process monitoring. These devices will win you over with their fully developed scope of service which makes reliably solving very complex tasks possible.
High-performance smart camera for reliable and convenient quality control and reliable code reading. For checking for presence, completeness, type, position and orientation. The device offers omnidirectional reading of the most important 1D- / 2D-codes with reference code comparison.

These sensors determine height contours.3D data can be easily generated for moving objects or by moving the sensor. The measurement data can either be output for external processing or preprocessed in the sensor for convenient object measurement or detection.
Light section sensors measure height profiles along a projected laser line. With these sensors, objects with high resolution can be detected quickly and reliably in 3D. Depending on the model, the function range extends from simply presence monitoring to edge measurement to 3D measurement of objects.
Laser scanners detect their environment using a quickly-rotating laser measurement beam. This allows objects to be detected over large distances with very large viewing angles and also enables contours to be measured.
In industrial automation, it is important to precisely determine distances and dimensions. Our distance sensors stand for maximum accuracy over small as well as large distances. They are used everywhere geometric parameters such as height or width need to be determined, e.g., when measuring small parts, inspecting the position of work pieces or monitoring filling levels. Optical distance methods are characterized by high resolving capacity at high measurement rates. Ultrasonic sensors facilitate reliable measurement results on transparent objects – even under difficult environmental conditions.
These sensors use laser or LED light to quickly and precisely measure distances on a wide range of materials, even at large ranges.
With ultrasonic technology, it is possible to reliably detect even partially or completely transparent objects and to perform reliable distance measurements. In addition, measurements can be performed in dusty, hazy or humid environments.
Measuring light curtains from Leuze electronic monitor a large measurement field and output measurement information from this field. Depending on the configuration and model, the devices are suitable for a variety of measurement tasks with various resolutions and can be integrated in different fieldbus environments.
Whether length, width or height measurement, positioning, hole recognition or multi-dimensional contour detection, this very fast, measuring light curtain is suitable for nearly every measurement task. With the easy-to-use Windows operating software, it can be quickly and easily adapted to the respective measurement task. The transmitter and receiver strips are available with various light-beam spacings and lengths of up to 3200 mm.
The forked shape offers measurement resolutions as great as 0.014 mm with high reproducibility without time-consuming alignment. An infrared light-band illuminates a line-scan camera (CCD line) and returns analog or digital output signals depending on the illuminated pixels and configuration.
With mouth widths of 27 or 100 mm, this forked photoelectric sensor delivers accurate measurement results over a 25 mm long measurement range thanks to its CCD line. Depending on the configuration, it is possible to measure transparent edges, the diameters of wires, threads and much more.
Particularly with moving system parts that need to automatically work together, the positioning of parts or work pieces with millimeter accuracy is of great importance. We offer devices here with two operating principles. One is a laser distance measurement device that measures absolute distances; the other is a bar code positioning system or an incremental device that measures movements along a reference tape.
The optical laser distance sensor is used everywhere that position data of moving system parts need to be calculated. With great accuracy and speed, the AMS300 i makes distance data available for dynamic control via a unique selection of industrial Ethernet and renowned fieldbus interfaces. Distances of up to 300 m are calculated through the use of state-of-the art signal processors in intervals on the order of ms.
Whether individual devices or optimally matched sets: in our extensive line of safety sensors, you will always find a suitable and efficient safety solution for point-of-operation, danger-zone and access guarding. All devices satisfy the applicable legal regulations and standards.
Reliable and interference-immune sensor safety technology ensures high system availability and productivity. Thus, in addition to the safety standards, high industrial requirements also played a key role in the development of all Safety Light Curtains. Wherever man and machine work “hand in hand”, Safety Light Curtains can be used vertically as hand and finger protection, as access guarding as well as horizontally as area protection. With respect to integration capability, availability and cost effectiveness, they meet the highest requirements.
Multiple Light Beam Safety Devices with muting function ensure constant personnel protection (access guarding) with unobstructed material infeed, e.g., in conveyor systems. They thereby help to ensure that both the productivity requirements as well as the safety requirements are met for automated production systems. Options such as the integrated Laser Alignment Aid, an integrated muting indicator and the patented swivel mount for easy fastening and alignment round out the program.
Safety Switches and magnetically coded safety systems can be used to monitor movable guards such as protective doors, sliding grids or flaps, for example in the food, pharmaceutical or timber industries. Opening the protective devices triggers an E-STOP command. Safety Locking Devices keep the protective doors locked, thereby preventing the inadmissible access of people until the guarded machine no longer poses a danger. The access to the danger zone is only released by an electric signal when either the dangerous movement has stopped (personnel protection) or an uninterruptible work process has been finished (machine protection).
For doors, flaps and covers that must remain closed during the operation of machines, Safety Switches for position monitoring and for the protection of personnel and systems are required. They are predestined for guarding machines and systems in which process or production interruptions are, in principle, possible or may be necessary. In addition to standard designs for universal use, Safety Hinge Switches and Safety Position Switches are available as alternatives to hinge switches on flaps.
Safety Locking Devices keep protective doors securely locked and thereby prevent the inadmissible access of people until the guarded machine no longer poses a danger. Not until there is no longer a danger to the machine or to the workers is access released by an electric signal. The Safety Locking Devices thereby make an important contribution to personnel protection and machine protection. With their robust design, all Leuze electronic Safety Switches and Locking Devices are designed for rough industrial applications.

With the programmable Safety Controllers, you obtain a system solution for small- to medium-size machines with maximum flexibility. In addition to the simple handling during start-up and the flexible configuration option with broad, on-board functionality, the simple expandability through safe I/O modules is an advantage. Communication modules for integration in the fieldbus level can also be integrated problem-free. Based on the MSIsafesoft programming software, the safety sensors of a machine can be efficiently integrated through the use of function modules and logic blocks.

Product Description
The use of optoelectronic sensors in potentially explosive areas requires specially protected devices. Our extensive product line offers powerful sensors in all common technologies.
the sensors of the Ex series are designed as diffuse reflection light scanners, retro-reflective photoelectric sensors or throughbeam photoelectric sensors and reliably detect objects at distances between 300 mm and 12 m. The intrinsically safe sensors transmit switching signals to the VS 403 isolated switching amplifier by way of the NAMUR interface. The temperature class for explosive gas areas is T6; for explosive dust areas it is 80°C.
The sensors are developed for all category 3G and 3D applications. With their small dimensions, they fit even in constrained spaces. The sensors and the protective housing are made of stainless steel and are also suitable for demanding operating conditions.
Currently available are retro-reflective photoelectric sensors and scanners with background suppression.
This sensor type detects colors and compares them to a stored reference value. They are the right solution whenever the color of an object or marking can serve as a sorting or inspection criteria. Depending on the configuration and specified tolerance values of the system, the result is output as a switching signal.
Thanks to extensive configuration options and 1 or 4 color channels with individually adjustable color tolerance, this series can be used for fast processes with short response times.
If only one color channel is needed, this compact design is both a simple as well as a reliable solution.
This series with 3 color channels and the scan function for color gradients can be used flexibly in many areas of applications.
This sensor type can use various light sources – such as white light, laser-generated red light or RGB light – to very precisely detect and compare contrasts and report the results to the process with minimal signal jitter. Through the automatic selection of the right transmitter colors, various color or gray value combinations can be reliably detected.
Contrast scanners distinguish between grayscale values, enabling them to detect minimal contrasts. As a result, a check can be performed for the presence of text or imprints or so-called marks detected.
Devices for ensuring system availability and the corresponding logistics in the graphics industry have been among our core competencies for decades. Not least of all because we have a great deal of practical experience and have application know-how from this business sector that has been collected over a decade.
The double sheet monitoring devices reliably prevent multi-layer sheets from being drawn in. As a result, scrap and damage are reliably avoided with machines that process stacks of paper and cardboard.
The systems operate on the basis of various physical principles and are thus able to cover nearly the entire range of applications.
The systems for splice inspection and for multiple track label inspection mainly detect splices in roll machines or labels in further processing, and do so independently of the surface color and material properties.
This sensor detects both visible as well as invisible luminescent markings. It sends the result as switching output or analog value and is used primarily for sorting and inspection tasks in areas in which other detection methods fail to supply reliable results or where the markings should not or must not be visible.
With various light spot profiles, filters, transmitter variants and accessories, this compact design includes everything needed for detecting luminescent objects.
Ultrasonic sensors are used whenever optical systems reach their limits. Hence, partially and fully transparent or extremely dark objects can be detected just as easily as objects with reflecting surfaces or objects in dusty, vaporous or humid environments.
This ultrasonic sensor features a high sound pressure and is thus suitable even for air transport systems.
From narrow to wide, this diffuse reflection ultrasonic scanner offers three different opening angles and sound lobes.
The cylindrical M12 design with two different opening angles ensures high flexibility during installation and use.
Short design, teachable and up to two independent switching outputs are the key features of this series. Also optionally available with angled head, which enables a sound outlet 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the M18 sensor.
Whenever large ranges are needed, the M30 sensors from the 430 series are the right choice. Two separate switching outputs can be set independently by means of potentiometer or PC software. A total of ten of these sensors can be easily synchronized with a cable.
