Silica Gel is an amorphous form of silicon dioxide, which is synthetically produced in the form of hard irregular granules (having the appearance of crystals). A micro porous structure of interlocking cavities gives a very high surface area. It is this structure that makes silica gel a high-capacity desiccant. The beauty of silica gel is the physical adsorption of water vapour into its internal pores. There is no chemical reaction, no by products or side effects. Even when saturated with water vapour, Silica Gel still has the appearance of a dry product, its shape unchanged.
Advantages of Silica Gel as a desiccant:
Silica Gel has many other properties that recommend it as a desiccant. It will adsorb up to one third of its own weight in water vapour. This adsorption efficiency is approximately 35% greater than typical desiccant clays, making Silica Gel the preferred choice where weight or efficiency are important factors.
It has an almost indefinite shelf life if stored in airtight conditions.
It can be regenerated and re-used if required. Gently heating silica gel will drive off the adsorbed moisture and leave it ready for re-use. It is a very inert material; it will not normally attack or corrode other materials and with the exception of strong alkalis and hydrofluoric acid is itself resistant to attack. It is non-toxic and non-flammable. It is most frequently and conveniently used packed in a breathable packet. These are available in a wide range of sizes suitable for use with a wide range of applications.
Standard White Silica Gel is referred to as being non-indicating. As it adsorbs moisture it remains physically unchanged. Indicating Blue Silica Gel are coloured Gels whose colour changes into pink as they adsorb moisture.
An environmentally friendly product made up of fine quality natural clay minerals mixed with calcium chloride and some special chemical additives. It further undergoes several physical and chemical processes like reaction, granule making, sifting and drying. Plastic packaging is less able to exclude oxygen from packaged foods than are the older glass and metal containers. Oxygen absorbers absorb oxygen and effectively reduce the aerobic environment to 0% oxygen. Therefore, aerobic bacteria and fungi are unable to grow in this environment. This will extend the shelf life of a food product drastically. A humidity indicator card (HIC) is a card on which a moisture-sensitive chemical is impregnated such that it will change color when the indicated relative humidity is exceeded. This item is an inexpensive way to quantify relative humidity levels inside sealed packaging. They are available in many configurations and used in many applications, especially military and semiconductor. The most common humidity indicator cards change color from blue (less than indicated RH level) to pink (greater than indicated RH level).
Humidity indicator cards are also present on many small electronic devices, ranging from cellular phones to laptop computers, for the purpose of alerting the manufacturer that the device has been exposed to high levels of moisture. Humidity Indicating Cards helps monitor desiccant activity and are ideal for use with desiccants in any application where moisture control is critical. Any color change from blue to pink indicates an unsealed container and/or damaging level of humidity.
HOW IT WORKS
Standard 6-Spot Humidity Indicator Card, 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% RH, changing of the colour from blue to pink indicates the level of RH inside the packing. For example, if all of the dots are deep blue on a card which is a 10%- 60% card then you can be assured that the humidity in that container is below 10%. This is very important for some products and household items because as long as the humidity is below 40%, basic corrosion (rust) or neither will mildew or mold in clothing or paper products. The purpose of HIC cards is to indicate the level of humidity in a given packing area, say any item with which it is kept. It is advisable to use a transparent packing or the packing material should have a window so that the user can view the level of humidity inside the packing without opening the packing. This particular product when received by the buyer gives an assurance that proper packing was done along with sufficient desiccant use in order to ensure proper delivery.
