This unit may be inserted in a15.875mm (5/8”) reamed hole. If reamed hole is used, a short spline should be added this prevents thermostat from turning when the temperature adjusting sleeve is turned. (See modifications.)
For limited space applications, a shorter (80mm) cartridge unit is available.

Minimum overshoot, small cycling differential and faster response are the most important requirements for control. Based on the differential expansion of metals principle, an increase in temperature causes the brass bottom strip of the Surface Mounting thermostat expand at a greater rate than the internal bridge assembly. Because the base is in direct contact with the heated surface, a temperature change is sensed rapidly.
Mounting
The heat sensitive base plate of the thermostat must be mounted in full area contact with the heated surface. The surface should be flat and smooth, and screws should be used for mounting. If clamps or brackets are used, they should be carefully designed to assure positive contact and positioning. To bring the control shaft out horizontally, in such applications as waffle irons and sandwich grills, the thermostat may be mounted on an "L" bracket of aluminum with little loss of sensitivity.
It is a miniature, precision built bimetallic device which senses temperature rise and whose internal contacts open and interrupt current when its temperature reaches the preset trip temperature specified by the user. The contacts close automatically and restore the current when the cut-out has cooled.
It is a snap action automatic reset temperature sensing device, the operating temperature of which may be either fixed or adjustable and which during normal operation operates by automatic opening an electric circuit when the temperature of the equipment or part of it reaches pre-determine value. These Thermostats have wide application in domestic as well as in industrial fields.
The protective wells for use with cartridge and block head thermostat units
In many applications involving the control of fluids and gases, the use of a well is recommended for :

When the removal of a hex or coupling head thermostat unit would require draining of the container in which it is inserted. Use of a well assembly permits removal of a thermostat unit at any time without other disturbance.

When surrounding ambient are subject to extreme changes thus affecting thermostat unit. The well makes it possible to insert the thermostat completely into the medium being controlled . Thereby eliminating these ambient temperature effects, or "head effect ".

For protection of the thermostat unit from external forces or blow which would tend to affect its operation.

When fluids have a corrosive action on the brass shell of the thermostat unit.
