Magnetic Resonance Flowmeters

<div class=

Magnetic resonance multiphase flowmeter for the simultaneous measurement of oil, gas and water

  • Single measurement principle, no radioactive source
  • Fully automated inline fluid characterisation
  • Large dynamic range up to 1:60, full bore design
  • Enhanced reservoir management

With the introduction of the M-PHASE 5000, KROHNE brings cutting-edge science to flowmeter design which delivers tangible economic advantage to our oil and gas customers.

Magnetic resonance makes use of a fundamental property of atoms and in effect makes it possible to “count” hydrogen atoms. Since oil, gas and water all contain hydrogen atoms, multiphase flow can be measured using magnetic resonance. For this purpose the fluids are magnetised and subsequently excited by radio frequency pulses. The hydrogen atoms respond to the pulses and send back echoes which are recorded. The amplitude of the echoes and the rate at which they decay is used to calculate the flow rates. The difference in magnetic resonance properties allows making a distinction between the flowrates of oil, gas and water.

User-friendliness begins with selecting the right display and control elements. But it certainly does not end there. With the market launch of the OPTIFLUX series in 2004, KROHNE has proven in an impressive way how to significantly improve user-friendliness by using pioneering assistance and diagnostics systems.

It all starts with the display: All devices feature a large, high-contrast display which makes it possible to display plain text information as well as graphic information such as the trend development of the flow. Operation is simple and convenient thanks to a user-friendly interface with four optical buttons. Not only does it look good – it’s also extremely practical. For example, the glass cover which protects the display from dirt and dust does not have to be removed during parameterization or operation.

Using the Quick Setup menus, the user can quickly adapt the OPTIFLUX to the application. The converter can communicate with the user in many languages including German, English, French and Spanish.

Modular product lines: Many combinations for one customised solution

At KROHNE, we believe in the concept of modularity when it comes to offering our customers the measuring solution best suited to their process. Both our IFC and MFC converters can be freely combined with all devices in the OPTIFLUX and OPTIMASS lines. This modularity is also reflected in the names of the devices. For example, the OPTIFLUX 1300 is a combination of the OPTIFLUX 1000 sensor and the IFC 300 converter.

Battery powered electromagnetic flowmeter for drinking water applications

  • Installation without inlet and outlet sections
  • New: Integrated flow, pressure and temperature measurement
  • New: Communication via Modbus RTU or pulse
  • New: Multiple power concept for any location
  • New: IP68 remote converter housing

WATERFLUX 3070 is the first battery powered water meter for the drinking water industry that is capable of measuring flow, pressure and temperature with one sensor.

To enable remote access to flow, pressure and temperature data the WATERFLUX 3070 has a RS485 Modbus RTU communication option. For this it has a special Modbus version designed for battery operation. With its real-time-data on flow, pressure and temperature the WATERFLUX 3070 provides important data to support customers business processes like zoning for water balance (DMA), water abstraction, pressure management, and revenue collection.

To fulfil the market demand for mains power with battery backup, the WATERFLUX can be operated on the external FlexPower unit. With this it can be connected to a 110…230V AC and 10…30V DC power source on site, e.g. an electrical grid, a solar panel or a small windmill, and automatically selects the available power option.

One of the strengths lies in its unique sensor design featuring a rectangular cross section and an efficient coil construction. The WATERFLUX significantly optimizes flow velocity and flow profile, and produces unprecedented accuracy under virtually all flow conditions, so it allows accurate measurement of high flows during the day and low flows during the night. It does not require inlets and outlets sections, and enables extremely low power consumption for a long battery lifetime.

Water meters are distributed over a widespread area and are often in difficult-to-reach locations. The WATERFLUX 3070 offers many features and benefits to meet the market requirements like simplified installation, integrated diagnostics, a long battery lifetime, multiple power options for any location, remote communication options and low overall maintenance.

Measuring principle

As early as 1832, Faraday tried to determine the speed of the current in the Thames by measuring the voltage induced in flowing water by the earth’s magnetic field. Electromagnetic flow measurement is based on Faraday’s Law of induction. According to this law, a specific voltage is induced in a conductor or conductive medium that moves through a magnetic field. This voltage is proportional to the speed of movement of the medium. On electromagnetic flowmeters, the induced voltage is tapped via two measuring electrodes in conducting contact with the medium. An electronic converter converts the signal into a proportional output signal.
