INTRODUCTION

Every electrical apparatus or machine Is provided with insulation between live part and earth or between two different sections of live parts. This insulation is required to be tested at high voltage values recommended by applicable relevant standards.
The standard Specification for various electrical apparatus specifies Power Frequency Voltage withstand test at different levels depending upon working voltage of electrical apparatus. It is observed from the various standards for electrical equipments that the minimum power frequency voltage withstand test level for electrical insulation is 2kV for one minute.
We have, therefore, standardized on manufacture of'AE' High Voltage Breakdown Testers with rated voltage of 5kV.

High Voltage Tests Sets of higher voltage upto 600kV are also manufactured against specific requirement. The standard voltages are 10kV, 15kV, 20kV, 25kV, 30kV, 50kV,100kV, 150kV, 200kV & 300kV. The test sets uplo 30kV are manufactured in Air Cooled design while the sets of 50kV & above are manufactured in Oil Cooled design. The output of these high voltage testers is single phase 50/60Hz. The standard H.T. current rating of air-cooled design as also of oil cooled design upto 150kV is 100mA for 30 minutes. For voltages ranges above 'AE' make 5kV A.C. (with 2.5kV tap) High Voltage Breakdown Tester is portable, sturdy & plug in to start type construction & requires minium table space. It broadly consists of 3 main sections.

1) High Voltage Transformer
2) Variable Voltage Source
3) Control Circuit

 

1) HIGH VOLATGE TRANSFORMER :

The High voltage transformer is single phase, single pole type & is of double wound resin moulded
construction. The H.T. winding is provided with graded insulation such that one end is insulated for 2kVinsulation and is earthed through a current sensing transformer & miiliammeter whereas other end isinsulated for full rated voltage & the same brought out through H.T. Cable & spring loaded Prod.

2) VARIABLE VOLTAGE SOURCE :

Variable Voltage supply is provided through a Dimmerslat (Variable auto-transformer) havingasuitable rating corresponding to the rating of H.V. Transformer. Dimmerstat Is rated for 230Volts A.C. input & 0-270V output. Limit switch at zero position end of Dimmerstat winding is provided to facilitate the H.T. winding to

ManuaIly operated control transformer (VariabIe auto-transformer) with zero interlock facility.

72mm sq. double range (0-2kV / 0-5kV) moving coil rectifier type voltmeter of class 1.5, provided to read NO LOAD H.T. Voltage.

72mm sq. double range (0-100mA) moving coil rectifier type A.C. Milliammeter of class 1.5, provided in the earth end of the H.T. winding to read H.T. Current.

Automatic tripping circuit is provided for isolation of supply, in the event of failure of the object under test. Rotary switch with four different settings of 5,10, 50 & 100mA is provided on front panel with LED indication

M.C.B. for short circuit protection of H.T. transformer & auto transforme

H.T. ON push button, Mains ON & H.T ON LED indication.

Range selection switch to select 2.5kV or 5kV range with LED indication.

P.T. Testing Unit

DESCRIPTION
It compares & reads the error due to imbalance in signals of test P.T. with reference P.T. and applies necessary proportional signal to nullify the error. Input is displayed in percentage or actual value, and phase error in centiradians or minutes. 
On separate key commands the error readings with date, time,% input & burden are sent either to a PC through RS232C port or to a printer connected to parallel port, in order to have report in "view format". The data read from RS232C port can be arranged by using any standard text editor, and a printout can be taken.

CORE BALANCE CTs (Resincast) :
These are used in detecting earth faults of very small magnitude. A three phase cable is passed through these CTs & the unbalanced currents in the three phases set up a differential flux giving rise to a current on the secondary side of these CTs sufficient to actuate a relay.
 
INTERPOSING CURRENT TRANSFORMERS (Resincast) :
Used in matching the ratios of main feeder CTs for differential protection schemes. These also find application as saturable CTs used in conjunction with main feeder CTs and thus protect the meters connected to these by limiting the current flowing through the meters.
 
SUMMATION CTs (Resincast) :
Current transformers intended to summate the currents in a number of feeders in association with the feeder Cts is called summation Transformer. The performance / testing of these CTs are governed by IS-6949-1973, BS-3938, IEC-185.

Dimmerstat Continuously Variable Voltage Auto Transformer

DESCRIPTION

Dimmerstat' is registered trade mark for AE make continuously variable voltage auto-transformer. It is the most effective device for stepless, breakless & continuous control of AC voltage & therefore for various parameters, dependent on AC voltage.

The basic Dimmerstat is meant for operation from a nominal input voltage of 240V 1ph AC & can give output voltage anywhere between 0 to 240V or 0 to 270V AC by simple transformer action. Three such Dimmerstats connected electrically in star and mechanically in tandem, become suitable for operation from a nominal input voltage of 415V 3Ph AC and can give output anywhere between 0 to 415V or 0 to 470V.

MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION
Single phase Dimmerstats are available in 3 types.
Portable type (P) with sheet steel enclosure for floor / table use.
Flush type (F) with open type construction. Suitable for panel mounting.
Tank type (T) immersed in oil in sheet steel tank with rollers.

 

Three phase Dimmerstat is usually ganged assembly of 3 coils, available in all 3 types: P, F, T.
Higher rating Dimmerstat (above 200 Amps) use 2/3 or more coils in parallel with load balancing arrangements.
Motorised Dimmerstat uses 240V AC Step-Syn Motor having 60 rpm speed at 50Hz. With proper gearing higher torque at lower speed can be achieved. Standard gear ratios used provide sweep time of 8, 15, 30, 45, 60,120secs.

DESCRIPTION

These are basically two phase motors. Two-phase supply is normally not available, hence to operate the motors from single phase AC supply, second phase is artificially created by inserting a Capacitor and Resistor combination in series with one of the motor phase windings. Suitable combination of Capacitor and Resistor assembly is supplied along with the motor. The speed of revolution is 60 RPM at 50Hz. Instant stop & reversibility are achieved by means of a single-pole, double throw switch with center OFF position.

Electronic Led Frequency Meter

DESCRIPTION

It is used to measure the applied frequency, functionally similar to vibrating reed meter. The meter incorporates light emitting diodes LEDs which are used instead of vibrating reeds to indicate applied frequency. The frequency is determined by blinking LEDs. When applied frequency matches with the frequency marked on the dial, that particular LED blinks with maximum intensity. When the applied frequency is mid way between two adjacent LEDs, both LEDs blink. When the meter is switched on all the LEDs glow sequentially for a period of 1 to 1.5 seconds, thereafter it will indicate the applied frequency.

All voltage ranges are available in single meter. Terminal screws with washers are provided only for specific voltage as per requirement & remaining two terminals are covered with insulated caps. 
In case of 96mm & 144mm instruments, two sets of LEDs with the same scale range can be offered, giving two independent meters in one casing (Dual Scale). This facilitates in comparing the frequency of two voltage supplies for paralleling operation.

Vibrating Reed Frequency Meter

DESCRIPTION

It is used to measure the applied frequency. Vibrating Reed Frequency meters indicate the supply frequency by means of individual reeds, when rated voltage ± 20% is applied across the terminals of the meter, the particular reed, whose natural frequency of vibration coincides with the supply frequency, vibrates with full amplitude. In case the supply frequency falls midway between two reeds both the reeds vibrate, at reduced amplitude. The amplitude of vibration at the tip of reeds is high enough for a distinct indication. 
The instrument can be operated at 110V, 220V, or 440V. Terminal screws with washers are provided for the selected operating voltage & remaining two terminals are covered with insulated caps.
In case of RFD96 and RFD144 instruments, two sets of reeds with the same scale range can be offered, giving two independent meters in one casing. This facilitates in comparing the frequency of two voltage supplies for paralleling operation

DESCRIPTION

'AE' SYNCHROSCOPE is categorized into two types A) Electro-mechanical and B) Electronic.

 

ELECTRO-MECHANICAL TYPE

It incorporates a POINTER and LED to indicate synchronising condition. If the generator- (II) frequency is higher or lower than that of mains- (I) the pointer rotates in clockwise or anti-clockwise direction respectively. The speed and direction of rotation depends upon difference in frequencies, which guides the operator to speed-up or slow-down the generator. Synchronising condition is determined by dark lamp method, wherein the pointer coincides with synchronising mark and the LED does not glow. The LED glows in accordance with difference in phase, frequency and amplitude of voltages. When the pointer is towards the bright LED, it indicates the antiphase condition.

ELETRONIC TYPE

It incorporates circle of LEDs which glows sequentially in either clockwise or anti-clockwise direction at variable speed in accordance with difference in frequencies of mains & generator. Synchronising condition is indicated by the glowing LED of "SYNCHRO ON" position. Antiphase condition is indicated by glowing LED of "SYNCHRO OFF" position at the bottom. This LED glows under following conditions

1) Absence of mains-(l) and presence of generator voltage-(ll)
2) If generator - (Il) voltage crosses ± 20% When frequencies of both supplies are equal, phase angle between two voltages is indicated by glowing of LED at an approximate angle with respect to "SYNCHRO ON" position.

DESCRIPTION
Moving coil instruments with circular scale of 240° employ a platinum taut band for suspension of moving coil assembly instead of pivot & jewel system. It is less prone to sluggishness & zero shift due to frictionless movement. 
These meters are basically used for the measurement of DC current & voltage, and can be used with built in rectifier for the measurement of AC current & voltage in the frequency range 45~65Hz. / 400Hz. The meters measure average value. It can be scaled to indicate RMS values (on request).
These instruments are not recommended for non-sinusoidal waveforms of current & voltage. The other indications like Frequency, Power & Power factor can be offered with suitable external transducers. Speed indication is possible if used with AC tacho-generator (not in the scope of AE).

Moving Coil Instruments are protected from damage or breakage under adverse conditions due to spring loaded jewel & pivot system. These Instruments are free from external magnetic field influences because of centre magnet system and are "CE" certified. 
Voltmeters are made upto 600V for direct connection and upto 1200V with / without external multiplier with sensitivity 1000 ohms / V. Higher sensitivities are available. Scale printed for other variables viz. Speed, Temp, pH, kW, kVAR, Hz or Cos ¢ (p, etc. can be supplied on request.

Ammeters with internal shunts are available upto 30 Amps and for higher currents upto 12000 Amps use external shunts of 50mV, 60mV, 75mV etc. (Please refer data sheet no. Shunt 03/99.)

DESCRIPTION

Moving Iron Instruments are protected from damage or breakage under adverse condition due to its spring loaded jewel & pivot system. These Instruments are free from external magnetic field influences because of magnetic shielding & are 'CE' certified. These instruments have a very efficient oil damping system, which gives almost a deadbeat movement to the pointer, without irksome oscillation. The movement is light yet sturdy and has a large torque to weight ratio which assures long life to instruments.

These indicate true RMS values practically independent of waveform even of high harmonics. The scale is compressed initially. Readability starts from 10 to 15 degree approximately.

Maximum Demand Meter

DESCRIPTION

Maximum Demand meter is used for monitoring thermal loading in Power Distribution systems, Networks, Machines etc. It indicates maximum loading current over a period. Short-period current peaks are not registered but long overloads are registered. 
In the Maximum Demand meter the measuring current flows through the bimetal spiral which is temperature sensitive. The free end of the spiral is connected to a black measuring pointer. The moving system is activated by heat generated by the current flowing through the spiral. The instrument is provided with an additional red slave pointer with a higher friction, which makes it to remain at its maximum position, which determines the maximum average loading current. The high torque of metallic movement drags the red pointer along with the black pointer. The red pointer remains stationary at the maximum value reached. This can be reset by rotating the knob provided on front facia. To prevent false indication due to fluctuations in ambient temperature, an additional bimetallic spiral is wound in opposite direction, which is mounted on the same spindle to compensate variation in temperature from -10 to + 55 degrees Centigrade.
Frequently there is a need to measure instantaneous current simultaneously & hence moving iron movement having the same range is incorporated in the same meter.

SELECTION OF RANGES
Upper limit of measuring range for meters shall be one of the following values -
1, 1.2, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.5, 8 or their decimal multiples.
Example for selection of proper range
1 ) Formula for 1 Phase active power
     P(max) = VI COS¢ Where COS¢ = 1.
     If Voltage = 500V & Current = 2.5A calculated power = 500 x 2.5 x 1 = 1.25kW.
     If the calculated value is 1.25kW 0 - 1.2kW or 0 - 1.25kW shall be selected as a range for power.
2) Formula for 3 Phase active power with PT & CT.
    P(max) = √ 3VI COS¢ x PTR x CTR Where COS ¢ = 1.
    If Voltage = 110V & Current = 5A PTR = 400kV/110V CTR = 1000A/5A
    calculated power = √ 3 x 110x5 x (400x1000/110) x (1000/5)= 692MW.
    If the calculated value is 692MW  0 - 600MW or  0 - 750MW shall be selected as a range for power.

 

Note :
All Wattmeters are calibrated at cos¢ = 1 and Varmeter at sin¢ = 1
All Low Power Factor Wattmeters are calibrated at cos¢ = 0.2 lag.
Voltage & Current range other than specified can be supplied on request, if feasible.

Dynamometric instruments are used for measurement of active, reactive & absolute power in 1 Phase & 3 Phase systems for balanced / unbalanced load conditions. Watt, Var & VA instruments incorporate current coils, connected in series with the load & pressure coils connected across the load. These instruments work on "Air cored Electro-Dynamometric" principle.

Power Factor meter incorporates two pressure coils, one with non-inductive resistance in series & other with capacitance in series & are cross connected. The deflecting torque produced is proportional to the phase angle between current & voltage vectors. The pointer rests anywhere on the scale when meter is not connected in the circuit, as there is no controlling torque.

SELECTION OF RANGES
Upper limit of measuring range for meters shall be one of the following values -
1, 1.2, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.5, 8 or their decimal multiples.
Example for selection of proper range
1 ) Formula for 1 Phase active power
     P(max) = VI COS¢ Where COS¢ = 1.
     If Voltage = 500V & Current = 2.5A calculated power = 500 x 2.5 x 1 = 1.25kW.
     If the calculated value is 1.25kW 0 - 1.2kW or 0 - 1.25kW shall be selected as a range for power.
2) Formula for 3 Phase active power with PT & CT.
    P(max) = √ 3VI COS¢ x PTR x CTR Where COS ¢ = 1.
    If Voltage = 110V & Current = 5A PTR = 400kV/110V CTR = 1000A/5A
    calculated power = √ 3 x 110x5 x (400x1000/110) x (1000/5)= 692MW.
    If the calculated value is 692MW  0 - 600MW or  0 - 750MW shall be selected as a range for power.

 

Note :
All Wattmeters are calibrated at cos¢ = 1 and Varmeter at sin¢ = 1
All Low Power Factor Wattmeters are calibrated at cos¢ = 0.2 lag.
Voltage & Current range other than specified can be supplied on request, if feasible.

NOTE :

INSTALLATION
The best performance is guaranteed if the following points are observed.
1) Shunts may be mounted horizontally or vertically. Horizontal mounting gives the best heat dissipation.
2) Utilize the full end block surface area.
3) Ample ventilation should be provided.
4) Busbar should be adequately rated, cleaned & coated with a thin layer of silicon grease applied to the contact surface area.
5) Bolts and nuts must be carefully tightened.

Shunts are not insulated & protection against accidental contact may be necessary in order to comply with Health & Safety regulations.
